LCD Monitors can blow up?

So there I was using my computer today, viewing RetroCopy's 3D game room when my 22 inch LCD monitor just suddenly stopped working.

At first I believed it was my graphics card or CPU, it was a pretty warm day and my I7 is overclocked. When I got out of my seat I could smell electronic death, a smell you will never forget once smelling it, capacitor leakage! Great I thought, just what I need. However it wasn't anything in my case that was bad, it was my monitor.

It is an ASUS VW222U, manufactured in August 2007 according to the back of it. Now how can a monitor just blow up? It seems quite strange that just using a monitor can result in one of the capacitors exploding on you, at least this is the first time it has happened to me or anyone I know. I'm writing this on one of my other LCD monitors, a Samsung, and tomorrow I will be buying a new widescreen Samsung, forever tainted with this poor ASUS experience.

Having switched back to a non widescreen monitor it has shocked me how not used to a 4:3 screen I am. Most of my code utilizes very long lines for efficiency and they are chopped off on this smaller monitor (1280x1024), forcing me to scroll. However this monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 930BF) which is about 5 years old now has superior image quality. With the ASUS I felt like my eyes were bleeding after a few hours of coding. I guess I shouldn't be surprised as it was relatively cheap at the time.

Oh well, at least replacing a monitor is easy, 0.700 won't be delayed by it. :)

Oh yes and check out the PROFILE/MEMBER sections now, they have been improved to show latest games, your personal details (age, location, etc) if you want to add them and some privacy options.

Yeah I've backed my work up to numerous places so it would be safe anyhow. I got a new SAMSUNG 2333SW PLUS, which is 23 inches and 16:9 ratio (old monitor was 16:10). It looks many times better than the ASUS and it's much more comfortable coding on it. It is wider too (1920x1080 instead of 1680x1050) so I can have even longer lines now! ;)

Have you got a proper job? From what I've read on this forum you say you work on this emulator for nearly 12 hours a day so how can you afford a new monitor just like that from claiming benefits?? Or maybe you won the lottery. I realise most people on this forum are spoilt due to the endless lists of consoles and games people have said they own that now fill up cupboards etc.

I'm not young like you liveevil, I've worked for a long time (well I feel so anyway) and someone with at my level is paid quite well. So I have a bit of freedom to work on projects I want. :)

I wasn't having a go at you, I just thought you said you were close to my age in a different thread. Obviously not as close as I thought. You may have been playing these so called 'Retro' games when they first came out in your 20's.

Was that you? Seems like so long ago. I'm not sure what you said your age was 32? If you are that old then you must realize if you have determination you can pretty much retire when you are 30 if you want. I was living on my own from 16 and had my first programming job at 18 so I've been quite busy in my youth working when most would have been going to university/college or whatnot. You can enter your age in your profile now if you want.

I'm not rich but I get by ok, I don't really need many material goods in my life to be happy. That said I don't know if I'll be working on RetroCopy full time for the rest of my life, it's just one of those things you take it as it comes, for now it's enjoyable so I do it.

My old 19' LCD 5:4 ASUS may work 59 hours without power off :)
I test games in emulators 16 hours per day...
