3D Arcade

I've made a video of a new 3D arcade in RetroCopy. It's more a possibility of the future of RetroCopy and it's virtual room than anything else.

One thing I realized while making this video is that DirectSound3D is completely inadequate. I'm going to be introducing my own 3D sound engine for v0.800 that removes most of the issues with what I am doing at the moment.

There are 16 virtual lights and 16 virtual arcade machines in this demo. It runs at 40+fps on my I7 @ 4GHz even while recording it.

For performance reasons, there should be an option to replace the emulated game with a video file until it is activated. People with faster computers can have all the machines fully emulated.

Performance reasons? Just don't run so many at once? :)

Once I have finished the software 3D sound engine it will be interesting how the performance goes, it should be a lot better. There are some behind the scene kernel operations happening with the sound at the moment that rob performance. Most of the reason the performance is killed in the video I made however is the lights and I have an ATI 4870 1GB. Not many games these days have more than say 4 dynamic lights active at any one time, and in that video there are 16!

I'm going to be giving multiple options for the lighting, my GFXCARD can handle about 16 lights at ok-ish performance (~40fps), the newer ones could maybe get up to 24 or so. Whereas if I limit the lights to only 4 the graphics card performance will never come into it. When it comes to running virtual machines my I7 can run at least 25 SMS at once.... so that isn't really an issue as much as the graphics/sound are at the moment.

Well, people just want to be immersed in a 3D arcade without paying tons of cash on a computer that is able run it. Most computers can run more videos than perfectly emulated games. The more options, the better.

Just take your time. :)
