Oops we did it again

I'll try not to let this 970 blow out to multi weeks, but it's going to take a little longer than I expected. Why? Well after some criticism about the interface from a few people Tommy put together a design he thought looked modern and fresh. I then put it into RetroCopy in a few hours. So if you don't like it, you know who to blame!

The top area, or taskbar like area stays there all the time now (except when in fullscreen or game room) and the GUI has been designed to flow more nicely together. I'm still tweaking things, the colors and whatnot, so we will see how it turns out over the coming days.

Looks like KDE on acid!!!

I agree with Zell, I would also go for darker colours, although I have transition lenses so when ever I open Retrocopy they should darken up and I should be OK ;)

Just make sure you put a warning on there for people with photo sensitive eyes ;)

I like it. One thing that would be nice (if possible) is to have a view which shows all the game boxes kinda like a store shelf. where you can just click a box to play. You could also have a filter so that the shelf only shows the PAL, USA, JAP games rather than all countries. Of course you could just populate your rom directory with just your region of choice.

DARKER COLORS WOULD BE BETTER

Yes, darker or maybe the ability to chose colors and shade.

I was thinking I should move the background picture out to the disk so that people could replace it if they want. The problem with darker colors is it means you can't have both black and white text as only the lighter stuff has a decent contrast.

But with this new design I'm sure a dark theme wouldn't be bad looking either. IF someone wants to edit the theme.xml with v0.970 and make a nice looking alternative theme I'll probably add it for v1.0 :)

I actually like this new look a lot better, so props to you guys.

One thing that has kind of grinded on me since day 1 though is having multiple boxes displayed at once, all next to each other, no single one in the foreground.

It just looks... sloppy, especially when all the boxes have near identical art.

It would make sense to either only show 1 box at a time, or at least have one further forward in the perspective kind of overshadowing the other 2.

I also think it would be good to keep it to just 3 boxes shown at once, One Japanese box, 1 US box, and 1 Pal box, at least if they are so similar.

The biggest problem is just having them all just next to each other, design-wise it just doesn't work.

The background should be replaced with a picture related to the currently selected system. If I select a Nintendo, the background should look Nintendo-ey. Look at Hyperspin for inspiration.

panzeroceania: So... 1 box at a time and maximum 3 boxes shown at once? :)

I think you're saying you're not that interested in all versions of a box, you just want it to look aesthetically fine. And there's no problem with that. Someone else mentioned they wanted to be able to pick boxes to play, and I think something that would do what you want is an alternative way to pick games from the game list. You could be able to browse boxes (or title screens/screenshots), spin them around or whatever. Then you would see only one box at a time (and you would of course be able to select your preferred region).

Also, another feature I've been working on for the next media library installment, is information about where boxes are from. Currently RetroCopy doesn't know what region a box is from, but that will change. So that means it could be possible to show boxes from the same region as the selected game in the game list.

@panzer I'm thinking maybe you are right. Might be best to show the other covers sort of smaller and just one selected.... I'll have a think about it!

yeah I'm not trying to rain on you guy's parade. I don't mind a stream of boxes, just the way the spacing is done now looks.... off.

If you look at an interface like the Xbox Live interface for looking at game covers, or Netflix
