Glitches and emulation errors in Mega Drive, Retrocopy 0.720

Retrocopy 0.720

Still some bugs with Sonic the Hedgehog 3, colors dots in water:



in Sonic 3D blast main menu colors too juiced and dark



i found megadrive approximately volume of PSG 1.000000, noise levels must be decreased at 3-5%

filter: cut off - causes random clicks.

sound may desync and produce random clicks and crackles.

Now i must continue test's :)

game "4 in 1" still can't work properly, works only Robocop 3.

Gargoyles - not playable, character still die in the black screen.

Thunder force 4 - not run at all, just show black screen.

Valis - not run at all, just show black screen.

Valis 3 - not run at all, just show black screen.

Squirel king - collision bug, character still fall and lost lives + new graphic glitch with main screen:



Beyon of Oasis - still hang and cause Retrocopy 0.720 crash!

Mega-lo-Mania - graphic glitch, messed textures of trees:

Mickey Mania still have glitches at the right side of screen:



Sonic the Hedgehog 2: still have strange scanlines in two players mode with split-screen:



Bonkers - graphic glitches, all textures distorted:



SuperSkidmarks - menu glitch, screen completely messed:



Sesame Street counting cafe - not work at all, just show black screen.

Wolf Child - On title screen name of game with wrong draw:



Mr Nuts - not run at all, just show black screen.

Super Fantasy Zone - not run at all, just show black screen.

Zoop - no playable, because i can't see items.



Risky Woods - all enemyes and items invisible.

Evander Holyfiel Boxing - box without boxers.



Killing game show - cause crash Retrocopy 0.720 with error messages!

NHL 98 after main menus show black screen.

Best of the Best championship karate - in pause mode, graphic glitches:



Phantom 2040 - lines of health and ammo with bugs:



Thunder force 4 - not run at all, just show black screen.

Soul Blade (unl) - when fight begin, crash Retrocopy 0.720!

Eternal Champions - graphic bug with health lines and timer, all graphic is broken.

On the other hand, now "Lotus" and "Outrun"'s problems seem gone:



But "Risky Woods" still won't show the graphics for weapons or enemies.

Yeah, and + Soul Blade (unl), Killing game show, Beyon of Oasis - these games crash with error messages.

I spend just 57 minutes for searching big list of known games with bugs, and i must check all 500 games for any minor bugs.

I found new bugs:

Addams family values - vertical color dots at right side of screen:



Aero the Acrobat 2 - horizontal white and grey dots:

Awesome Possum - new bug with controller, strange button A and C works not properly, button C work as pause?

Beast Wrestler - not run at all, just show black screen.

Bio-Hazard Battle - new bug with controller, strange button A and C works not properly, button C work as pause?

Brett Hull Hockey '95 - all players invisible :)

Bugs life (unl) - not run at all, just show black screen.

Chester Cheetah - this new strange graphic bug:

Likely means you don't have enough performance to enable it. Press F2 to check for "repos" that means sound can't keep up if you get them constantly. I struggled enabling all the options in some instances.

Yeah I need to make a progressive mode for that don't I, no one likes the interlaced emulation.

Yes i think what screen filled scanlines it's bug, because on my real thing + all another emulators i never see these scanlines :)

Sound repos=1 and sound skips 3 - this is good result?

Maybe very high frequences cause clicks when Sonic do harsh attack or collect rings, it cause crackles and clicks.

You may test this issue on game: populous 1 - sounds as heart beat with crackle :)

Dune the battle for arrakis - new graphic bug:



F1 circus md - after game menu, Retrocopy 0.720 crash with error message!

F-117 night storm - not run at all, just show black screen.

Fatman - not run at all, just show black screen.

Gaiares - not run at all, just show black screen.

Gain ground - still won't show characters in game land.

Garfield - caught in the act: all graphic still distorted.

Home Alone 2 - all graphic distorted:

lhx attack chopper - not run at all, just show black screen.

Marvel land - color dots on the sky.

Actually, accurate interlaced emulation need an interlaced display or this will look like shit. There is no point in doing this on CRT since it will not be accurately rendered by the Video Hardware anyway. Also, there are no "scanline" in interlaced video, "scanline" is a side effect of lowres non-interlaced display (aka 240p). Those lines are not visible on real hardware, there is indeed some screen tearing because odd/even lines are flickering at 60hz but that's all, it's nothing near like that.

Mmm well it can be somewhat accurately rendered on our displays. When a line is rendered on CRT it begins to fade so it does begin to look darker and darker until the TV comes back to "redraw it". Since one field is drawn first then the next you can notice the scanline effect on some CRT with interlaced content. RetroCopy doesn't emulate this fade so it looks quite different (and wrong).

If you put an old CRT PC monitor at 60Hz you can notice this fade/flicker and it updates 60 times per second the whole frame, so if you imagine it at 30Hz for half the lines you could predict how it would be roughly.

If CRT interlaced display could keep the fields steady and simply have the combing you talk about not many people would be complaining about headaches/eye strain and whatnot when viewing it.

And after all testings adjustings, i tryed set PSG to 1.000000, Bass boost = 0, Mid Boost = -4, High Boost = -79, and run Sonic & Knuckles again, and like a blade by brains, in memory flash 15 seconds music from past time, and i scream it my real Mega Drive 2! So PSG in compare with all YM2612 channels + TV aspects with muffled sound :)

Added:

I have idea, for another audio systems, we may increase High Boost from -79 for example to -60 and check the game Sonic & Knuckles, rings must sounds at volume of music, yes rings may a bit louder at 3-5% and if we do right setup, and it will sounds as real Mega Drive 2 :)

I still have issue with game - Crusader of Centy, text messages messed + inner save game not work.



Phantasy Star 2 - inner save game not work (SRAM)

Phantasy Star 3 - inner save game not work (SRAM)

So after testing various games with SRAM battery, i 100% sure Beyond of Oasis, NHL all series, and many sport simulators, causes crashes Retrocopy with error messages, because SRAM not implemented, they require SRAM battery for proper work.

Very required SRAM support, please ;)

Bram stoker's dracula - after intro and option just hang, not playable yet.



And about fullscreen mode: i use resolution 1280x960 and Monitor still use 1280x1024, and i got small black borders.

And yes, Skitchin still have single line glitch...

Hopefully i found all bugs, and found another method of post pictures ;)

Thanks for doing the pictures like that, looks neat! :)

SRAM support should be working, maybe some ROMs aren't being correctly detected or have bad headers. I'll have a look into it, but I tested with Shining Force 2 and it appeared to work.

I use ROMs passed test of GoodGen v3, Kega Fusion not show any warnings with bad checksums, Kega and Regen works perfectly with my ROM's

After testing NHL games, Retrocopy crashes with error messages before show SEGA logo





Sorry it only on russian language, this is all crashes Retrocopy :)

P.S i tested all games in non-stop 39 hours :D

Good ROMs can still have "bad headers", it just means the developers didn't correctly set the header. It wasn't really a requirement for the game to work on the real system to set header correctly. Most emulators seem to hardcode things for certain games to overcome these issues.

And why Beyond of Oasis crashes? i search all sources and download all versions of this game, but she still not work in Retrocopy.

Some games at start up try get access to SRAM, and if SRAM in emulator can't recognize game, emulator crashes with error message, i know about these issues, because i make bug reports for AamirM, currently Regen can't detect only 3-4 games with SRAM :)

Because I haven't hardcoded as many "fixes" for games so it's quite likely a few games crash on startup that should have SRAM set. It's just a theory anyhow, I'm not certain why it's crashing.
