As I'm (still) currently working on Mega Drive/Genesis covers for the new media library release, I thought I could share these lists I have made of covers that are different than the standard Mega Drive/Genesis covers. As RetroCopy, as always, strive for accuracy, we want to present the covers exactly like they were, in the same type of packaging they originally came in. So if a game came was released in a cardboard box, that is what you will see in RetroCopy.

Sega of America for some reason thought it would be a good idea to release some of their Genesis games in cardboard boxes instead of the plastic ones -- or in some cases, in addition to the plastic covers. This list show American cardboard boxes:

* = the game was also released in a standard plastic box
? = I have found a source that says the game was released as a cardboard box, but I have not found any photographic evidence to support this. All the images I have found are of plastic boxes. Please help out if you can prove the game was released as a cardboard box, or if you happen to own one.

------

Not many games were released in cardboard boxes in Europe, but these were:

Double Dragon (same as USA?)
HardBall! (same as USA - with sticker that says "supports Mega Drive")
!Lethal Enforcers
Mike Ditka Power Football (same box as USA)
!Phantom 2040 (standard plastic box inside big cardboard box with lots of stuff)
Sonic & Knuckles
Summer Challenge (same box as USA)
Turrican
Universal Soldier (same box as USA)
WarpSpeed (same box as USA)
*Winter Challenge

------

Not many games were released in Japan either, using cardboard boxes:

Divine Sealing
Ganso Kyuukyoku Girl 6-nin Adventure Mahjong! Dial Q wo Mawase!
!Lethal Enforcers
Sonic & Knuckles

-------

Games released by SUNSOFT in Japan use a different box than the standard ones - they are much smaller (half the size), and look very different:

Batman
Doraemon (with drawing set)
Flashback
NBA Playoffs - Bulls vs. Blazers
NBA Pro Basketball: Bulls vs Lakers
Shi Kin Joh
Super Fantasy Zone
Tel Tel Mahjong
Tel Tel Stadium

-------

Games released by Electronic Arts Victor in Japan (EA joined together with a company called Victor in order for Japanese people to accept these American made games) use a box that is much thicker than the standard Mega Drive boxes:

2020 Super Baseball
Crue Ball
Desert Strike: Wangan Sakusan
Dream Team USA
EA Hockey
F-117 Stealth Operation: Night Storm
F-22 Interceptor
FIFA International Soccer
General Chaos: Daikonsen
James Pond II: Codename RoboCod
Jashin Draxos
John Madden Football - Pro Football
Jordan vs. Bird: One on One
Jungle Strike: Uketsugareta Kyouki
LHX Attack Chopper
Mutant League Football
NBA Playoffs: Bulls vs. Blazers
NBA Pro Basketball: Bulls vs. Lakers and the NBA Playoffs
NBA Showdown 94
NFL Pro Football 94
PGA Tour Golf II
Power Monger
Road Rash
Road Rash II
Space Funky Bob
The Killing Game Show
Wizard of the Immortal
Zou! Zou! Zou! Rescue Daisakusen

------

Also note that Japanese boxes don't have the flap you see on top of American and European boxes. However, I have found out that some games released by Acclaim Entertainment in Japan use this flap:

Batman Forever
Foreman for Real
Judge Dredd
Justice League Taskforce
Mortal Kombat: Shinken Kourin Densetsu
NBA Jam
Newman Haas IndyCar featuring Nigel Mansell
True Lies
Virtual Bart
WWF Raw

Please help if you know something I don't, or if you spot a mistake here.

Yeah, thank you for starting it out! There's a lot more covers now! 1753 Mega Drive/Genesis covers! All standard plastic cover of every American, European and Japanese game are included. Yeah, it's taken me a long time, but it was A LOT of work. Hopefully it won't be long before it's released! :)
