why cant we edit old posts

Why is it that we cant edit our own posts after a little while? there is a post i made that i would like to edit to remove a link from, but cant as i cant edit the post

A lot of places have a time limit on edits and the main reason I added it was to stop people from "changing history" if that makes sense. I may extend this in the future for certain users, what post in particular? I can remove the link for you.
