I remember the console versions of "Out Run" getting rave reviews back in the days. To understand this, you need to know that "Out Run" was one of the most popular arcades of the era, and that the conversions to personal computers released a few years before were nothing short of awful.

Still, I wouldn't call the GG / SMS versions of "Out Run" a success, they pale in comparison of the Genesis version. This 3-D version, however, is a definite improvement over the regular SMS version. More than the 3-D, the key to its success is that most of the grahics have been reworked and look much better, even in 2-D, and the eye candy has always been a key factor in "Out Run"'s appeal.

The only drawback I can think of is that the second stage now substitutes its original arches for tunnels, which look far less impressive. But then, if you want that stage in its original form you have all the other conversions.
