Out Run is one of Sega's most popular games, and has had many sequels. The Master System version of the original game is the one I grew up with (a friend owned it so I played it a lot at his house), and the one I am most familiar with.
And it's a great racing game! Your opponent is the timer ticking down, and you can't make too many mistakes before you run out of time, unable to reach the next level. Reaching the second and third level is quite easy, but after that it gets quite challenging and most of the times I play this game, the timer runs out while I'm on the third level.
The things I like about Out Run is: 1) The music, which is amazing. You get to select between three different tunes before you start, and they are all classics. Just have a look around YouTube and see how many people make their own versions of these songs! 2) The graphics, which look very good for a game from 1987. 3) How smooth the game is. You are in full control of the car, and when you're at full speed, the game is really fast, but still everything feels very smooth and natural. 4) Variety. Most racing games at the time only had left and right curves, but here you also have hilltops and hilltops in combination with left and right curves. This makes the game much more challenging. The thing that makes the game most varied, and which I liked very much as a kid, is that you are able to select your own route. At the end of each level you can either go left or right, which makes for a lot of different routes and alternatives. And every level has different backgrounds and colours, making sure the game never gets repetitive.
