This is a game I didn't own or play as a kid, but have fallen in love with (or enjoyed playing - let's not get too excited here) through playing it on emulators over the years. It follows a classic formula, and is quite similar to many other games of its kind. The player controls an airplane that we see from a top-down perspective, and the goal is to shoot everything that get's in our way. There seems to be a story about saving the world or something, but let's face it: for these types of game, the "story" is not important or even necessary. What it's all about is: "Fire! Fire! Fire" Fire!". The Sega Rapid Fire-unit would have been very useful for this game (I didn't have one as a kid), or a modern gamepad with a turbofire-button (which I have).

The game get's quite difficult once you advance from the first stage (or mission), and you will soon go crazy with enemies both on the ground and in the air firing at you from everywhere. No wonder you get to continue even after you loose all your lives - the game is really difficult. The third boss is especially hard. Another thing that makes the game difficult, is the (back)ground. There is a lot going on down there, and sometimes it can take your focus away from the bullets you have to avoid.

The main reason why I like this game so much, is probably the music. Both the title screen music and the first stage music are fantastic (as well as beautiful), and the boss music is so ... groovy. This game is also one of the games that were originally going to be released in Japan (with FM sound), but was only released overseas as the SMS was cancelled in Japan. Of course the European and American SMS didn't have the FM Unit, but thanks to emulators it's now possible to hear Scramble Spirit's fantastic music in glorious FM.

So... Good game, even though it get's extremely hard (without cheating that is...)
