Stage Select
At the Player Select screen, press RIGHT 20 times, then BUTTON1 once for each stage you want to skip. Then select your character and press BUTTON2 to start.

Are emulators like RetroCopy breaking the law?

If you purchase it on Wii Virtual Console (VC) or XBOX Live Arcade (XBLA) you can still legally download it. The reason for this is due to laws which allow you to backup software that you purchase.
