This Mario pirate-game was ported from the MSX and uses an older graphics mode that the SMS supports because of backward compatibility with the SG-1000. Very few SMS games use these older modes, F-16 Fighter and Loretta no Shouzzou being the other notable ones. As can be seen in these games it is an inferior graphics mode to use on the SMS.
